Wake the lion. We come to you.

Singapore lion dance troupe and academy, performing since 2016.

南洋醒獅學院 · Singapore

Nine years of drums on Singapore's five-foot ways.

Nam Yang is a lion dance troupe and a teaching academy. We perform 醒獅 — the awakened lion — for openings, new years, weddings and stages, and we train the people who will still be doing it in twenty years.

采青 · Plucking the greens

Anyone can rent a lion. The pluck is the craft.

The approach
The approachThe lion comes to your door, bows three times, and studies the greens hung above it.
The snatch
The snatchIt rears, hesitates, and takes the bundle down. This is the part every troupe is judged on.
The blessing, thrown back
The blessing, thrown backIt chews and scatters the leaves over your doorway and your guests. The fortune goes to you.

The greens hide a red packet. The lion takes it down, chews, and spits the lettuce back over your shop and your guests — the fortune is not kept, it is thrown to you. That thirty seconds is what people remember, and it is the part a troupe either does properly or does not.

点睛 · Dotting the eye

A lion is not alive until someone wakes it.

Before the first drum, the lion's eyes are blank. Your guest of honour takes a brush, dips it in red, and dots them.

That is 点睛 — and it is the only part of the ritual the client performs, not the troupe. Your boss, your bride, your grandfather. We bring the brush, the cinnabar and the lion; you bring the person whose moment it should be.

Students training at the Nam Yang academy
學院 · The academy

A troupe that teaches.

The 學院 in our name is not decoration. Nam Yang trains beginners from primary school through adults — footwork, drum, head and tail — and puts the ones who are ready on real stages.

  • 01Beginners are the point. Nobody arrives knowing how. The first term is stance, footwork and drum rhythm — the head comes later, once you can hold the frame.
  • 02Drum, cymbal, gong. The percussion section is half the performance. Every student learns to keep the set before they learn to move to it.
  • 03Head and tail, both. You train both roles. The tail carries the lift and the balance; most people are surprised which one is harder.
  • 04Perform for real. Students who are ready join the troupe on real bookings — openings, new year rounds and community shows, with the troupe beside them.

Before you ask

Questions we get every January.

What does a performance cost?
It depends on the troupe size, the length of the set, the venue and the date — a single lion at a shop opening and a four-lion Chinese New Year round are not the same job. Tell us the occasion, the place and the date and we will come back with a straight number, not a package you have to decode.
How far in advance should we book?
Chinese New Year dates go three to four months ahead and the first few days sell out first — enquire early, even if the details are not settled. For grand openings and weddings, two to four weeks is usually comfortable. Short notice is always worth asking about; we will tell you honestly if we can cover it.
How much space do you need? Can you perform indoors?
Most of our work is indoors — mall atriums, shop units, void decks, corridors and ballrooms. A single lion needs roughly a three-by-three metre clearing plus room for the drum, cymbals and gong. High-pole routines are the exception: they need real overhead clearance and a prepared surface, so raise it early.
What is included?
The lion or lions, the full percussion section, the 采青 greens and the ritual itself, and the coordination with your run sheet or your auspicious timing. Tell us if you want 点睛 — the eye-dotting — so we can brief whoever is doing it.
Do you help choose an auspicious date and time?
Many clients already have a time from their own geomancer or temple, and we work to it. If you do not have one, tell us the occasion and we will work around the timings traditionally used for it.
Can we learn lion dance with you?
Yes. The academy takes complete beginners from primary-school age through adults, and no experience is needed. Students start on drum and footwork long before they pick up a head.

Tell us the date. We'll bring the lion.

Grand opening, new year round, wedding gate or corporate stage — send us the occasion, the place and the time. Chinese New Year dates go three to four months ahead, so early is better than settled.
